• Preparing Future Scientists through Multicultural Affairs program
  When Albertina Andrade came to the United States from Cape Verde in 1996, she knew very little English. Just three years later, she won the Boston Pulbic Schools's Citywide Science Fair and graduated valedictorian of her class, thanks in part to her involvement with the Multicultural Affairs Office-sponsored Science Education Program

• Extending the laboratory to the patient – clinical lab testing improvements made
  Measuring a patients blood sugar is much easier that it used to be for Gino Chisari, RN, clinical nurse specialist on Bigelow 11. Thanks to a new device called a glucometer, Chisari and other nurses throught the hospital have an easier time completing this frequently-used test.

• Getting kids ready to go back to school
  Parents whose children are heading back to school often need a little help around this time of year getting their youngsters ready. According to Mary Lou Kelleher, RN, MS, clinical nurse specialist for MGH Pediatrics, there are several things that parents should consider when sending their children back to school.

• MGH physician helps Honduras on medical mission
  Eric Krakauer, MD, PhD, had a life-changing experience when he went to Honduras in February to help villagers in an area devastated by Hurricane Mitch. Krakauer, who is associate director of the MGH Palliative Care Service and an attending physician on the Cabot Medical Service, was a member of a volunteer medical group organized by colleagues at BWH.

• The MGH Dental Group makes a move
  In May, the MGH Dental Group moved from its three-chair wing in the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery suite on WACC 2 to a state-of-the-art, 10-chair facility at 100 Charles River Plaza. The move to a larger facility has enabled the staff to offer a complete spectrum of outpatient dental care services for adult and pediatric patients.

• BEMC celebrates first anniversary with MGH
  In celebration of their first anniversary of joining the MGH, staff members from the Boston Evening Medical Center recently enjoyed an afternoon of sightseeing on a Duck Tour.
