Hand hygiene message: "Did you use CalStat?"

As part of the MGH Hand Hygiene Program, posters have been distributed throughout the hospital this week to remind MGHers to practice good hand hygiene both before and after patient contact. By using CalStat — the waterless hand disinfectant available on all inpatient units, outpatient practices and health centers — employees and staff can reduce the risk of spreading infections.

Studies have shown that hand disinfectant gels, such as CalStat, are more effective than soap and water in removing bacteria from hands. A small amount of CalStat works immediately by killing germs on contact. Use of these waterless gels also results in improved compliance with hand hygiene practice.

A new version of the CalStat product was introduced hospitalwide in July. The new product doesn't contain perfumes or dyes. The new hand hygiene poster is the first of a series that will be distributed regularly to remind MGHers about the importance of proper hand hygiene.

For more information about the Hand Hygiene Program, call the Infection Control Unit at (617) 726-2036.
