A mother's memory helps
raise funds
for melanoma research Frank Haluska, MD, PhD, left, of
MGH Oncology/Hematology and director of the Melanoma Research Center, along with George,
Scotty and Ken Carpenter, were four of the 250 people participating in the first annual
Sunflower Golf Tournament in Townsend, Mass., June 24. The tournament was organized by
Scotty Carpenter, with the support of family and friends, in memory of his mother, Pat
Carpenter, who died of melanoma. The tournament raised more than $14,000 for the Melanoma
Cancer Research Fund at the MGH. Haluska was Pat Carpenter's oncologist. "Whether
it's my mother or the guy down the road, cancer is touching everyone," says Scotty
Carpenter. "We're already planning next year's tournament."
