MGH employees make a difference in patient care

Every day MGHers are finding new ways to improve the comfort and care provided to patients. The smallest of projects can make a big difference in a patient's experience. Whether it's improving patient brochures or adding scenic photographs to the Emergency Department waiting area, employees understand the significant effect a little change can make.

Thanks to the "Making a Difference" grant program, the MGH can turn these ideas into reality. The MGH and the Massachusetts General Physicians Organization (MGPO) jointly sponsor the program, which started three years ago. The program offers a payment of up to $5,000 to support employees' ideas for improving the quality of service provided to patients, families and fellow MGHers.

All MGH employees, including Bulfinch temps and volunteers, are eligible to apply with the approval of a department manager.

"Last year we allocated more than $75,000 to 21 different recipients. We are always looking for employees with creative ideas," says Melanie Cassamas, project manager for the Service Improvement Department. "Written proposals are submitted to a review board for selection of the recipients, and the funds usually are available in December."

One of the departments to receive such funding was the Emergency Department (ED), which received three grants. The grant money was used for a beautification project that transformed the ED into a more comfortable place. The first grant supported a collaboration between the ED and the MGH Photo Lab. Scott Dickinson and Dennis Tangney of the ED and Sam Riley of the MGH Photo Lab worked together to display scenic photographs on the walls in the waiting area and in the hallways. The other ongoing projects will bring in 12 television sets for patient rooms and six portable phones specifically dedicated for patient use.

"We are trying to create a better atmosphere for patients and their families," says Julia Sinclair, administrative director of the ED. "The ED is a very busy place, and unfortunately, many times patients have to wait. We hope that these improvements will allow patients to feel more at ease and comfortable in the ED."

The Making a Difference grant program now is accepting applications. Applicants should submit a written proposal by Oct. 1. For more information about the grant program, contact Cassamas at (617) 726-1816.
