Dodging detours: Alternate routes to the MGH during the DNC

W ith the road closures and traffic detours that are expected during the Democratic National Convention (DNC) — July 26 to 29 — many patients, visitors and employees are seeking alternate routes to get to and from the hospital during theconvention. MGH Police, Security and Outside Services is offering alternate route directions (see below) to get to the hospital. While these alternate routes will avoid the road closures, delays may be unavoidable. These routes also could be subject to change.

From the North

I-93 Southbound
From I-93 Southbound, take Exit 32 (Route 60) in Somerville. From Route 60, turn onto Mystic Avenue, following it south to the McGrath O'Brien Highway
intersection. Turn right onto McGrath O'Brien Highway. Follow McGrath O'Brien Highway to 3rd Street in Cambridge. Turn right onto 3rd Street and
follow to the end. Turn left onto Broadway. Follow Broadway over the Longfellow Bridge into Charles Circle. Follow signs for Downtown onto Cambridge Street. For access to the MGH main campus, take a left at the first set of lights onto North Grove Street — the MGH main entrance is straight ahead.

Route 1 South
From Route 1 South, take Copeland Circle exit to Route 60. Follow directions above from Route 60.

Route 1 South (second option)
From Route 1 South, take Newburyport Turnpike/MA-99/Broadway exit. Follow Route 99, approximately 13 miles, to Sullivan Square in Charlestown. Bear left onto rotary and then merge onto Rutherford Avenue. Take right after Bunker Hill Community College onto the Gilmore Bridge. Continue through two sets of lights onto Memorial Drive and go under bridge. Take first right onto the Longfellow Bridge. Go over the Longfellow Bridge into Charles Circle. Follow signs for Downtown onto Cambridge Street. Take first left onto North Grove Street — the MGH main entrance is straight ahead.

From the South

Option 1
From I-93 North, take exit 18 at the Massachusetts Avenue exit. Follow Massachusetts Avenue for approximately two miles. Take a right onto Boylston Street. Then take a left on Charles Street (after the Public Garden). Take first right onto Beacon Street and follow up the hill past the State House. Take a left onto Bowdoin Street, following to the bottom of the hill. Take a left onto Cambridge Street. Take fourth right onto North Grove Street — the MGH main entrance is straight ahead.

Option 2
From I-93 North, take exit 14 at the Morrissey Boulevard Exit. Follow Morrissey Boulevard approximately two miles. At rotary, bear right onto Day Boulevard, following it for approximately 1.5 miles. Take a left onto 1st Street (.5 miles). Then take next right onto Summer Street. Continue on Summer Street for four sets of lights (.75 miles). Take a right (The Postal Annex will be on the left.). Take a left onto Congress and continue for one eighth of a mile. Take a right onto Atlantic Avenue and follow it for approximately .75 miles. Take a left onto State Street, following it up the hill through a set of lights (pass over Congress St.) Take next right onto Cambridge Street. At sixth set of lights, take a right onto North Grove Street — the MGH main entrance is straight ahead.

From the West

Route 2 East
Take Route 2 East to the end. Take a left onto Route 16 following it for 2.2 miles. Take a right onto Broadway, following it for two miles. Broadway becomes Maffa Way. Enter Sullivan Square Rotary, bearing right onto Rutherford Avenue. Follow it for 1.5 miles to North Washington Street Bridge. Go over bridge and continue straight through three sets of lights. Take a right at Haymarket MBTA Station (New Chardon Street). Proceed to the top of the hill (.3 miles). Take a right onto Cambridge Street. Take fourth right onto North Grove Street — the MGH main entrance is straight ahead.

Mass Pike East

From the Mass Pike East, take the Copley exit, bearing right. Take a quick left onto Dartmouth Street, follow for one block. Take a right onto Boylston Street, following for approximately .3 miles. Take a left onto Charles Street (after the Public Gardens, before Boston Common). Take a right onto Beacon Street and follow up the hill past the State House. Take a left onto Bowdoin Street, following to the bottom of the hill. Take a left onto Cambridge Street. Take fourth right onto North Grove Street — the MGH main entrance is straight ahead.
