happening Course
for design of clinical trials
The Education Unit of the MGH Clinical Research Program (CRP), in collaboration with the
MGH Cancer Center, will offer an intensive course, "Design and Conduct of Clinical
Trials," Mondays and Thursdays throughout September and October, from 5 to 6:15 pm in
the Trustees Room on Bulfinch 2. The course will survey the theory and practice of
clinical trials, review design and conduct of clinical research and enable participants to
develop effective clinical trials. The course is geared toward second-year fellows and
junior faculty. The course fee is $200. Enrollment is limited, and registration is

MGPO quarterly meeting
All physicians and staff are invited to the Massachusetts General Physicians Organization
(MGPO) Quarterly Meeting, July 18, from 5 to 6:30 pm in the O'Keeffe Auditorium. Speakers
will include Peter L. Slavin, MD, chairman and CEO of the MGPO; Samuel O. Thier, MD,
president and CEO of Partners HealthCare; James J. Mongan, MD, president of the MGH; and
Anne J. Dubitzky, vice president of MGH/MGPO Managed Care Contracting and Marketing.

Clinical Pastoral Education Program fellowships
Through the funding of the Kenneth B. Schwartz
Center and the MGH Department of Nursing, fellowships now are available for the Winter
2002 MGH Clinical Pastoral Education Program. The program is open to persons from any
discipline who work directly with patients and/or families in a health care setting, and
who wish to integrate spiritual caregiving skills into their professional practice.
Four Kenneth B. Schwartz Fellowships in Pastoral Care will be awarded to caregivers
from non-pastoral disciplines, and two Spiritual Caregiver Fellowships will be awarded to
MGH registered nurses who are in direct caregiver roles and have a minimum of two years of
nursing experience.
The program is part-time and will run from Jan. 7 through May 17, 2002. Sessions will
be held every Monday excluding Jan. 21 and April 1 from 9 am to
5 pm. Additional hours will be negotiated for the clinical component. All applications are

School Age Vacation Club
The MGH Backup Child Care Center will offer two School Age Vacation Club sessions in
August. The first session will run from Aug. 20 to 24, and the second will run from Aug.
27 to 31. All employees' children, from kindergarten completion to 12 years of age, are
eligible to participate in the program, which will include such activities as a tour of
Fenway Park and a pizza party. Reservations will be accepted for the entire week only, and
part-time slots are not available. Reservations will be taken by phone only July 18,
beginning at 8 am. A tuition payment of $225 per week per child must be received by July

Clifford D. Stewart III Memorial Scholarship
Award
Applications now are being accepted for the second annual Clifford D. Stewart III Memorial
Scholarship Award. The award is named in memory of Cliff Stewart, an employee of Walsh
Brothers Construction, who served as a construction manager at the MGH for more than 20
years. The award will recognize employees who demonstrate the qualities for which Stewart
is remembered: commitment to excellence in the building industry, self-improvement,
mentoring, helping others and dedication to the MGH campus and community. All applications
