The MGH Nutritional Support Unit (NSU) recently appointed Sheldon Randall, MD, to the position of medical director of the unit. The NSU provides consultation and daily management to clinicians caring for patients who are being fed parenterally — with the use of a feeding tube.

After an assessment of operations within the NSU, a decision was made to maintain centralization of the unit. The medical director and NSU nurse practitioners will handle authorization for orders on the unit. The unit also will have an expanded role in providing education regarding parenteral nutrition to residents, attending physicians, nurses and other clinical staff. Materials Management now will handle the responsibility of dispensing G tubes.
