Portrait of a surgeon Former chief of MGH Cardiac Surgery, Mortimer Buckley, MD, recently was honored with a portrait unveiling May 16. Buckley was chief of the division for 28 years until his retirement in 1998. The portrait was made possible through a gift from Arthur and Ann Flaherty, who also gave an endowed fund to start the annual Buckley Lecture. The portrait unveiling was held before this year's lecture, which featured guest speaker L. Henry Edmunds, Jr., MD, former chief of Cardiac Surgery at the University of Pennsylvania and editor of the Annals of Thoracic Surgery. The portrait was painted by artists Warren and Lucia Prosperi, who also painted the Ether Dome mural and other significant artwork throughout the hospital.
