Nurse Recognition 2001 salutes MGH's finest

From the bedside to the laboratory to the OR, nurses are an integral part of the MGH. The hospital demonstrated its appreciation for its nurses May 6 through 18 in Nurse Recognition 2001.

The celebration began May 6 with a breakfast reception for staff nurses in the Trustees Room. The next two weeks featured a variety of educational and research sessions, including music and opportunities for reflection and meditation. Presentations covered topics such as the influence of media on the nursing field, as well as legislation and private institutions that are addressing the nursing shortage. Other events ranged from scientific sessions about nursing research findings to a presentation about providing culturally-competent care to patients.

Jeanette Ives Erickson, RN, MS, senior vice president for Patient Care Services and chief nurse, offered inspiration and direction in her address, "Defining the Future of Nursing." Sylvia Rimm, PhD, author of the books "See Jane Win" and "How Jane Won," presented perspectives on women's success in leadership roles. An especially popular feature of this year's program was the display of 20 MGH nursing research posters in the Main Corridor.

MGH Nurses Day at the Boston Museum of Science May 11 provided a highlight of the celebration.
