• MGH forum addresses racial and ethnic differences in health care
  It's a complicated health care subject that has a long history. For years, minorities have received lower quality medical care than whites in the United States. This difference — or disparity — in the health care experience and health outcomes was the topic of an engaging forum, sponsored by the MGH Disparities Committee, May 6 in the O'Keeffe Auditorium.
  

• Study finds HIV protein can drive immune cells away
  MGH researchers may have provided another clue as to how HIV, the virus that causes AIDS, evades the immune system's defenses. In the May issue of the Journal of Virology, a team from the Partners AIDS Research Center (PARC) at the MGH describes how a key protein that helps the virus enter its target T helper cells may also keep away the T killer cells that should destroy HIV-infected cells.
  

• Presidential candidate extends thanks to MGH
  When Sen. John Kerry came to the MGH March 31 to have surgery performed on his shoulder, the entire country took interest in the status of the presidential hopeful's health. After the successful surgery and his same-day discharge, the senator sent a letter to Peter L. Slavin, MD, president of the MGH, to show his gratitude for the superb care he received and his quick recovery.
  

• Distinguished professor: MGHer elected to NAS
  John T. Potts, Jr, MD, of the MGH Endocrine Unit and MGH Department of Medicine, recently was elected as one of 72 new members of the National Academy of Sciences (NAS). Election to membership of the NAS is considered one of the highest honors that can be accorded to a U.S. scientist and is given in recognition of distinguished and continuing achievements in original research.
  

• 2004 Claflin winners announced
  For women, parenthood in itself is an enormous undertaking that demands unprecedented time and dedication. Combined with a prominent career in medical research, the obstacles women may face are wide and varied. In 1996, the Claflin Distinguished Scholar Awards Program was established to address these challenges, and this year six junior faculty members from a variety of MGH departments were selected to receive the award.
  

• Art that speaks of hope
  MGH President Peter L. Slavin, MD, the Boston Health Care for the Homeless Program (BHCHP) at the MGH and the MGH Community Benefits Program invite the MGH community to an opening reception for an art exhibit by patients at the Barbara McInnis House — a recuperative program of the BHCHP — May 21, from 4 to 5:30 pm under the Bulfinch Tent. The art exhibit will hang across from Coffee Central May 17 to 28.
