MGH
physician receives diversity award
Henry Mankin, MD, of the MGH Department of Orthopædics, recently
was presented the 2004 American Academy of Orthopædic Surgeons (AAOS)
Diversity Award at the AAOS annual meeting. Mankin received the award
for his outstanding achievements in medical education, basic and clinical
research, oncology and residency training.
According to the AAOS, Mankin (pictured right, with James Herndon,
MD, chief of Partners Orthopædic Surgery) has promoted diversity
throughout his career by
setting an example in his own life and teaching his colleagues to be more
open. His recruiting efforts brought women, African Americans and Hispanics
into his training program.
Yolanda Roth, MD, FACS, a former colleague, said she would always appreciate
the doors that Mankin opened for her. "Dr. Mankin did not just teach
his fellows,
residents and medical students just about orthopaedics," she says.
"He taught them about fairness, the highest level of morals, ethics,
compassion and humanity toward
all people."
