Ulysses J. Balis, MD, of MGH Pathology, received the 2000 College of American Pathologists Foundation Lansky Award in recognition of demonstrated leadership and significant contributions to the field of pathology. Balis received the award at the American Society of Clinical Pathologists annual meeting in San Diego.

David H. Sachs, MD, director of the MGH Transplantation Biology Research Center, recently was awarded the Medical Foundation Award for Distinguished Contributions to Health Research for his major contributions to the field of organ transplantation. The award was presented at the Medical Foundation's annual meeting in Boston.

Andrew L. Warshaw, MD, surgeon-in-chief of the MGH, has been appointed to the Health Policy Steering Committee of the American College of Surgeons.

Anne W. Alonso, PhD, of MGH Psychiatry; Walter C. Guralnick, DMD, of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery; and Janet E. Hall, MD, of the MGH Reproductive Endocrine Unit, are the MGH recipients of the 2000 A. Clifford Barger Excellence in Mentoring Awards.

Giuseppe R. Nigri, MD, of MGH Surgery, has been recognized by the American Society for Laser Medicine and Surgery for submitting the best overall science paper to its 21st annual meeting. Nigri will receive the award for his paper, "Improved Sterilization of Prosthetic Vascular Grafts Using Shock Waves," at the society's Presidential Awards and Citations ceremony in New Orleans.
