Play ball: Toronto baseball player collaborates with MGH

040502Bluejay.jpg (22431 bytes)While Toronto Blue Jays first baseman Carlos Delgado (far right) was in town this week to face off against the Red Sox during this year’s opening series, he took time off from practice to visit the MGH for a special collaboration. Delgado has made a major contribution to a project that will establish a telemedicine link between the MGH and Buen Samaritano (Good Samaritan) hospital in Aguadilla, a city on the west coast of Puerto Rico.

Delgado and Ernesto Gonzalez, MD, of MGH Dermatology (near right), were both born and raised in Aguadillo and have worked together with Partners Telemedicine to establish this program aimed at enhancing health care opportunities for the underserved local population. The project will start with the use of telemedicine to provide educational opportunities for physicians in Puerto Rico and, once the groundwork has been established, will expand to encompass teleconsultation between Puerto Rican physicians and specialists at the MGH.

MGH and Partners leadership met with Delgado April 2 to thank him for exhibiting leadership in his community and for drawing awareness to the project. Delgado also visited young patients at MassGeneral Hospital for Children before returning to team practice at Fenway Park.
