What's Happening

Neuroendocrine symposium
The MGH Neuroendocrine Unit will present a patient symposium, "Acromegaly and Growth Hormone Deficiency," for patients with pituitary disease, April 3, 9 am to 2 pm in the Walcott Conference Rooms. Breakfast and lunch will be provided. Registration is required. To register, call 4-1579.

Student research opportunities
The Mallinckrodt General Clinical Research Center (GCRC) program will provide stipends up to $2,500 for medical, pre-medical and nursing students to become involved in clinical investigation on the GCRC. These fellowships provide the opportunity to mentor students during the summer. Applications are due by May 1. Corporate challenge
Join the MGH Running Club for the Chase Corporate Challenge 3.5-mile race, June 7 at 7 pm on Boston Common. To join the MGH team, bring an original signed release form and entry fee to Kate Ulbricht, Blake 1096 (may be left under the door) or send it through in-house mail to Kate Ulbricht, Pharmacy Department, Clinics 060. Forms may be printed by visiting www.chasecc.com/bos_runr.pdf and are due by April 10. Registration will be confirmed by e-mail. For more information, visit www.chase.com. Runners are responsible to pick up their own race-day packets between 10 am and 5 pm, June 2, 5 and 6 at Conventures, 1 Design Center Place, Suite 718, Boston.

HMS program and awards ceremony
The Kinsey Caucus and Harvard Medical School (HMS) will present "The Last Legal Discrimination: The Impact of Public Policy on the Gay and Lesbian Community," April 6, 4:30 pm at the Carl Walter Amphitheater, 260 Longwood Ave. The program will be followed by the presentation of the second annual HMS/HSDM Harold Amos Faculty Diversity and Staff Diversity Awards.

Charlestown public health van
The MGH Charlestown HealthCare Center, the Boston Public Health Commission and the Bunker Hill Housing Development will sponsor "The Health Connection – Boston’s Public Health Van," Fridays through June 30, 10 am to 1 pm at the Bunker Hill Housing Development, 41 McNulty Court, Charlestown. Free and confidential services will include health screenings, health education and information about health insurance and other community services.

Charlestown Health Awareness Day
The MGH Charlestown HealthCare Center will co-sponsor a "Health Awareness Day," April 27, 1 to 5 pm at Johnnie’s Foodmaster, Bunker Hill Mall. Screenings for blood pressure, cholesterol and diabetes will be provided. Information about breast and cervical health, nutrition, smoking, skin cancer, the Women, Infant and Children (WIC) program and the Charlestown Cardiovascular Health Improvement Project will be available. Ethics forum series
The MGH Ethics Task Force will sponsor a forum, "Crossing Cultural Boundaries: Caring for International Patients in Boston," April 5, 5 to 6 pm in the Ether Dome. Refreshments will be served beginning at 4:30 pm. For more information, call 4-5348 or send e-mail to skdodge@partners.org.

MGH Cancer Center HOPES seminars
The MGH Cancer Center HOPES Program (Helping Our Patients/Families through Education and Support) will offer drop-in yoga, April 6, 13, 20 and 27. "Feeling Stressed? Some Simple Steps to Relax," facilitated by Vicki Cotton, MSW, of MGH Social Services, will be offered April 3. "Managing Symptoms: Nausea and Vomiting," facilitated by Nina Grenon, RN, MSN, CS, of the MGH Hematology/Oncology Unit, will be offered April 4. All seminars are held in the Cancer Resource Room, located on Cox 1, noon to 1 pm. For more information, call 4-1822.

BabyFaire
Boston’s Biggest BabyFaire will be held April 1, 9 am to 5 pm, and April 2, 10 am to 5 pm at the Bayside Expo Center. The MGH will sponsor a booth with Newton-Wellesley and North Shore hospitals. Information about healthy eating, breastfeeding, allergies, bike safety and play for toddlers will be available.

Research career fair
The World of Opportunities Research Career Fair will be held April 27, 11 am to 5 pm at Partners Corporate Training, 185 Charles River Plaza. Scientific sessions will be held throughout the day, and MGHers will have the opportunity to meet with MGH Human Resources and lab managers to discuss open positions. Alcohol screening day
April is National Alcohol Awareness Month. Information about research and referral resources will be available April 6, 9 am to 4 pm in the Main Corridor. Experts will be available to answer questions. For more information, or to find out about free and anonymous screening, call 4-9383.

Secretarial and clerical support luncheon
The 2000 Secretarial and Clerical Support Day Luncheon and Pamela J. Ellis Award presentation will be held April 26, noon to 2 pm under the Bulfinch tent.
