Healing through the art of music

032902harpist.jpg (22798 bytes)Soothing sounds wafted through the MGH Cancer Center earlier this month as musician Lynne Davis (right) played her harp for patients, visitors and staff as part of a pilot program that joins the healing elements of music with patient care. Cancer Center staff received an overwhelmingly positive response from patients and family members, many of whom said that the music created a more relaxed, peaceful environment.

Davis, who is a certified music practitioner and psychotherapist, says that it was a privilege for her to perform at the Cancer Center. "It was wonderful to be able to perform for patients and their families," she says. "I was honored to participate in this innovative pursuit to bring the healing arts to the hospital. It truly is pioneering for the Cancer Center to introduce this kind of complementary caring program as part of the overall care of patients."

The pilot program was funded through a grant from The Friends of the MGH Cancer Center.
