  • Addressing inequality in health care: MGH Disparities Committee report
Some studies have shown that despite advances in the modern medical system, racial and ethnic minorities still receive less care and/or lower quality care than white Americans. This message was reinforced when former Surgeon General David Satcher, MD, presented startling data on the issue of racial and ethnic disparities during a visit to the MGH in 2002. Since his visit, the hospital has embarked on an important mission to address these issues within the MGH community and beyond.
  • New MGH chief of Cardiac Surgery selected
After serving as interim chief of MGH Cardiac Surgery since 2003, Gus Vlahakes, MD, has been selected to fill the position permanently. He succeeds David Torchiana, MD, who left the position to lead the Massachusetts General Physicians Organization (MGPO) as chairman and CEO.
  • Life-saving support in Niger
MGH Vincent obstetrical generalist Lori Berkowitz, MD, recently spent two weeks performing pelvic reconstructive surgery in a village in the western African country of Niger, under the auspices of the International Organization for Women and Development.
  • MGH employee awarded for her excellent efforts
Every day MGH employees demonstrate that they are hard working and dedicated to the hospital, patients, families and visitors. Because so many employees go above and beyond the call of duty, Peter L. Slavin, MD, president of the MGH, created the Excellence in Action Award - a program that helps recognize employees who have gone beyond their everyday commitment to the MGH community.
  • Nominating excellence in administrative support
The 2004 Pamela J. Ellis Memorial Secretarial Award nominations now are being accepted. In memory and recognition of the outstanding performance and values of Pamela J. Ellis, who served as an executive secretary at the MGH between 1992 and 1996, an award was established in 1997 to honor MGH secretarial staff who exhibit similarly remarkable qualities in their work. The $1,000 award will be presented at the Secretarial/Clerical Staff Day luncheon April 21.
