AMMP speaker urges pursuit of dreams at Black History Month celebration

Robert Simmons, RN, RRT, MBA, was the featured speaker Feb. 13 at a meeting of the Association of Multicultural Members of Partners (AMMP) in the Trustees Room, in observation of Black History Month. Simmons began his career as a respiratory therapist at the MGH while attending school full-time for his nursing degree. Today, he is the founder and co-owner of Boston Home Infusion, a thriving home medical services company.

He also expressed his pleasure with increased efforts to promote diversity at the MGH. "I'm very impressed. I never thought I would stand here, in the place I am today, talking about my success in a room with this many people of color." Simmons (left) discussed his rise to prominence in the business world, noting that many doubters told him he would never succeed in starting his own company — words he refused to accept. "We need not impose restrictions and boundaries on ourselves," he said. "Take what you have here and use it. Here at the MGH, you have many others around you to encourage you and share your experiences. Be resourceful to yourselves and to the people standing behind you."

Ronald A. Greene, RN, BSN, chair of AMMP, recognized the strides being made at the MGH in promoting diversity: "Diversity is at the forefront at the MGH. It's been a long and hard road, but it has been supported."

AMMP meets on the second Thursday of each month, from noon to 1:30 pm in Bulfinch 222. All employees are welcome.
