Success through selflessness: MGHer recognized as Black Achiever

020201blackachiever.jpg (21487 bytes)Jacqueline S. Dejean (right), research financial manager in MGH Radiology, recently was named a Black Achiever by the YMCA of Greater Boston. Dejean received her award at the Recognition Awards Gala held Jan. 25 at the Boston Copley Marriott.

The Black Achievers program recognizes African-American professionals with distinguished records in both their professional accomplishments and in their commitment to mentoring young people. Honorees are selected from throughout the Greater Boston community and represent a variety of career fields and backgrounds.

Alvin Allen, escort and messenger at BWH, and Kim M. Clarke, senior legal assistant in the Partners Office of the General Counsel, were the two other Partners employees selected as Black Achievers.

Dejean has served as research financial manager for MGH Radiology since February 1998. She also is the chair of the Diversity Subcommittee of the Association of Multicultural Members of Partners (AMMP) and has been actively involved in various roles within the Society of Research Administrators.

Dejean's career accomplishments are exceptional — yet it is her work with young people that has distinguished her as a role model and community leader. She has served on the board of directors of Outreach Ministries and Teen Challenge in both Massachusetts and Rhode Island, and hopes to volunteer her time as a mentor for adolescents in a college preparatory program. Dejean also aspires to develop a training program in basic financial management for students. She will appear as a guest panelist at a high school health care expo later this month.

"I have always believed that a well-rounded individual is one who shares his or her 'wealth' with those around them," says Dejean. "A smile, a word of encouragement, my time, talents and resources are what I have been given by God to share with others." She also remarked upon the significance of being named a Black Achiever: "Selection as a Black Achiever allows me to be part of a network of African-Americans who have and are accomplishing great things in their workplaces and in their personal lives."
