Bringhurst named to leadership position

Richard Bringhurst, MD, of the MGH Department of Medicine, has been named senior vice president for Medical Services for the MGH and the Massachusetts General Physicians Organization (MGPO), effective Feb. 1. In this role, he will have responsibility for administrative oversight of the many divisions and programs within the Department of Medicine.

Working closely with Dennis Ausiello, MD, MGH physician-in-chief, Bringhurst will be the liaison for the many clinical and research efforts associated with the Department of Medicine, with the exception of primary care, the MGH health centers and the cancer and cardiac service lines.

Bringhurst (right) also will serve as a link between the senior administration for the hospital and the MGPO. "Rick will be a tremendous asset in this new role as he provides an important bridge between the physicians and the hospital," says David Torchiana, MD, chairman and chief executive officer for the MGPO.

In addition, he will be serving as the vice president designated to participate in the administrative oversight of the research facility planned for Charles River Plaza.

"Rick has repeatedly demonstrated his strong management skills, most recently directing research space management for the hospital," says Peter L. Slavin, MD, MGH president. "He brings valuable clinical and research skills to the table, and I am thrilled that he is joining our senior management team."

Ausiello adds, "Rick is a talented and dedicated physician, who has served as a strong leader for the Department of Medicine. His thoughtfulness and flexibility have made him widely respected as a colleague, mentor and friend."

Bringhurst has been a member of the MGH family since 1974, coming to the hospital as a medical resident and then joining the medical staff at the completion of his training. Since 1994, he has served as chief of staff in the Department of Medicine, and in 1996 was named associate director of Research. He received his medical degree from Harvard Medical School and his undergraduate degree with highest honors from Princeton University.
