Warshaw recognized for supporting women faculty

Harvard Medical School (HMS) has honored Andrew L. Warshaw, MD, MGH surgeon-in-chief, with the prestigious 2008 Joseph B. Martin Dean's Leadership Award for the Advancement of Women Faculty. Awarded by the HMS/Harvard School of Dental Medicine Joint Committee on the Status of Women, the prize recognizes an individual who has made significant contributions to the recruitment, retention and advancement of women faculty at HMS and its affiliated institutions.

Under Warshaw's leadership, the MGH Department of Surgery has made great strides in creating a supportive environment for female physicians. During his tenure, more women have been appointed to faculty positions than at any other time in the history of the department, and Warshaw continues to actively recruit women to
the staff. He also has been a strong proponent of programs that help women faculty members balance careers with family and was the first chief in the Department of Surgery to permit part-time appointments, allowing women physicians with young children the time to both raise their families and continue their careers. On a hospitalwide level, he has been dedicated to helping female faculty receive senior academic and executive leadership positions and has lent his support to the MGH Office for Women's Careers. From 2000 through 2004, he was a member of the American College of Surgeons Committee on Women's Issues and is currently one of the few male members of the Association for Women Surgeons.
