  • Walk the walk: Take the Yawkey Path to safety
Beginning Oct. 15, MGH staff, employees, patients and visitors will be required to use a newly covered, safe pathway along North Grove Street when walking between the Main Entrance and the Yawkey Center for Outpatient Care. Use of the Fruit Street sidewalk will not be permitted; therefore, access to and from the two buildings via the sidewalk will be strictly prohibited. This new pathway was created to ensure pedestrian safety from construction along Fruit Street and heavy vehicular traffic at the Fruit Street Garage.
  • Halfway to 90/90
The September results are official: The MGH has achieved a hospitalwide rate of 90 percent compliance with hand hygiene before patient contact and 93 percent after contact.
  • Finding hope after violence
Clinicians are trained to heal, but providing care to refugee patients who have suffered extreme trauma — such as torture, sexual violence and other human rights violations — can be particularly complex. The enormity of the experience may seem overwhelming, and often there is a fear that the patient may never fully recover.
  • Grants highlight employee contributions
For MGH employees, there is nothing more important than striving to improve the quality of care patients and their families receive. However, at an organization such as the MGH, which relies on the work of tens of thousands of people daily, individual contributions sometimes are eclipsed by the progress of the entire institution. On Sept. 19, MGHers had the opportunity to celebrate their colleagues at the annual Making a Difference Grant program reception and poster display.
  • In memoriam: Ruth M. Farrisey, RN
Ruth M. Farrisey, RN, longtime MGHer and beloved and respected nursing pioneer, died Sept. 24 at a long-term care facility in Framingham. She was 90 years old.
  • Competitive wage and salary program continues
Thanks to another year of positive financial performance, the MGH again will offer employees a competitive wage and salary program for fiscal year 2008. The Massachusetts General Physicians Organization (MGPO) will follow a similar approach, with each practice responsible for making the compensation decisions based on the financial ability to participate.
