Behind-the-scenes
staff take center stage on Operations Support Staff Day
Thousands of MGH operations support staff took a well-earned
break from their work as they were treated to a special luncheon June
12 in honor of Operations Support Staff Day. The occasion honors the many
contributions of the MGH's
behind-the-scenes staff members who ensure that hospital operations run
smoothly and efficiently each day. Along with the lunch catered by MGH
Nutrition and Food Services, employees were given embroidered duffel bags
as tokens of appreciation.
A highlight of the event was the presentation of the 2007 Ricardo Diaz
Memorial Award to this year's recipient, Domingas Pires of Environmental
Services. A 12-year veteran of the MGH, Pires began her career at the
hospital as an environmental service aide and now works on White 5. As
family and friends
cheered, Pires accepted the plaque and check. Her name will be added to
the Employee Wall of Recognition on Ellison 1.

According to Robert L. Martuza, MD, chief of the Neurosurgical Service,
and Andrew L. Warshaw, MD, surgeon-in-chief, who were among those who
nominated Pires for the award, it is a well-deserved honor. "Domingas
tends to our offices on White 5 as well as several other locations on
a daily basis in a quiet, efficient and friendly way and always with a
smile," they wrote in a nomination letter. "She goes out of
her way to make your day easier and frequently asks if there is something
particular she could do to help. Domingas is a true asset to the MGH community
and an outstanding individual."
The day's festivities concluded with two receptions for evening shift
employees, one of which included a surprise appearance by Vince Wilfork,
defensive lineman for the New England Patriots.
