Surgery open house celebrates new facility

Nearly 100 MGHers attended a festive open house reception Jan. 25 to celebrate the Division of General and Gastrointestinal Surgery's recent move to the Wang Ambulatory Care Center (WACC). Located on the fourth floor, the new outpatient practice facility features office space for 14 surgeons, eight exam rooms and two procedure rooms equipped with video sigmoidoscopy capability.

Hosts at the open house included Andrew Warshaw, MD, surgeon-in-chief; David Rattner, MD, chief of the division of General and Gastrointestinal Surgery; Britain Nicholson, MD, chief medical officer; Ann Prestipino, senior vice president for Surgical and Anesthesia Services and Clinical Business Development; and Deborah Doroni, executive director for the Department of Surgery. Warshaw and Rattner welcomed the guests and acknowledged the hard work and dedication of those who helped to make the project happen. They also commented on the future growth potential of the expanded clinical programs and the enhanced patient comfort that the new facility offers.

The Division of General and Gastrointestinal Surgery is the first MGH surgery division to relocate to the new group practice facility in the WACC as part of a larger reconstruction project for the MGH Department of Surgery. The arrangement allows for multiple surgeons to meet with patients at the same time and provides capacity for future growth. It also facilitates the development of new programs such as an oncology-surgery multidisciplinary clinic recently begun by General Surgery and the MGH Cancer Center, as well as the introduction of pelvic ultrasound services as a component of the division's colorectal surgery program.
