Bernstein receives
Howard M. Goodman Fellowship
Bradley Bernstein, MD, PhD, of the MGH Department of Pathology, recently
was named the first recipient of the Howard M. Goodman Fellowship, which
was presented to him at the July 10 meeting of the MGH Executive Committee
on Research (ECOR). As a fellow, Bernstein will receive $150,000 per year
for two years.
The fellowship honors Howard M. Goodman, PhD, who founded the MGH Department
of Molecular Biology in 1982 and served as its chief until 2004. Goodman's
career was guided by the belief that scientists who have demonstrated
continued excellence should have the resources to pursue their goals and
projects. To honor this legacy and to support young MGH scientists in
the pursuit of excellence, a Goodman fellow will be selected annually
by ECOR from the MGH research community.

Committee; Bernstein, and Jerrold Rosenbaum, MD, chair of ECOR. Seated,
Peter L. Slavin, MD, president of the MGH.
Bernstein was selected from nearly 80 applicants and nominees. He plans
to use the award to further his research on chromatin — found in
the nucleus of cells and how it contributes to the development of disease.
A major focus of his work is a recent discovery related to pluripotency,
which is the potential of a stem cell to develop into many different types
of mature cells.
