• Martin Luther King remembered
  MGHers gathered Jan. 13 to honor the life, work and legacy of Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr., at a special breakfast celebration "In the Spirit of Unity and Service: Remember! Celebrate! Act!" in the East Garden Dining Room. The event was sponsored and coordinated by the Association of Multicultural Members of Partners (AMMP) and emceed by Helen Witherspoon, of MGH Training and Development and chairwoman of AMMP.

• MGH and NSMC expand ambulatory care services
  The MGH and North Shore Medical Center (NSMC) announced last week plans to develop jointly a 115,000-square-foot ambulatory care center and a 50,000-square-foot medical office building on the North Shore off Route 128 that would enhance access to and delivery of medical services north of Boston.

• Patriots fans win big in silent auctions
  Although the New England Patriots ended this year's Super Bowl dream with a heartbreaking loss to the Denver Broncos Jan. 14, a few lucky MGH fans still had the opportunity to celebrate as the winners of autographed team merchandise in a number of recent silent auctions. Sponsored by MGH Human Resources, the auctions raised more than $4,500 to directly benefit the MGH Fund, which supports a variety of hospital activities.

• Helping patients and staff understand Medicare Part D
  MGH Patient Financial Services, Senior HealthWISE, Partners Community Benefits and the MGH Blum Patient and Family Learning Center are joining together to help MGH patients understand their Medicare Part D prescription options and to help with enrollment in prescription plans. During this month, patients and MGH staff will be able to choose from weekly information tables, weekly workshops and daily one-on-one counseling sessions to assist them in understanding and assessing their coverage options.

• MADI Resource Center celebrates fifth anniversary
  The MGH Mood and Anxiety Disorders Institute (MADI) Resource Center — part of the MGH Department of Psychiatry — celebrated its fifth anniversary Jan. 3 with a dessert reception in the Trustees Room. The center utilizes the department's latest advances in research and clinical programs to provide practical mental health information to patients, families and caregivers.

• JCAHO survey: Outpatient practices get ready
  As the hospital refines its preparations for the next survey from the Joint Commission of Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO), to take place some time in 2006, special focus recently has been on preparing the ambulatory care services.

• In memoriam: Bradford Cannon, MD
  Bradford Cannon, MD, a longtime plastic surgeon at the MGH, died Dec. 20 in Lincoln, Mass. He was 98.
