Tarbell named first C.C. Wang Professor of Radiation Oncology

At a recent ceremony held at Harvard Medical School (HMS), Nancy Tarbell, MD, became the first incumbent for the newly established C.C. Wang, MD, Professorship in Radiation Oncology at HMS and the MGH. Tarbell is division chief of Radiation Oncology at MassGeneral Hospital for Children and director of the MGH's new Center for Faculty Development. She is a national and international leader in radiation oncology. She focuses particularly on the treatment of children.

The professorship honors Wang and his remarkable career as a radiation oncologist at the MGH. During his many years at the hospital, Wang treated thousands of patients, lengthening, enhancing and saving their lives. Through his training of some of the best radiation oncologists in the country and his authorship of textbooks used to teach students of radiation oncology, he influenced the field well beyond the walls of the MGH. Speaking at the ceremony, Peter L. Slavin, MD, president of the MGH, remarked, "I am particularly pleased to be part of this celebration because in addition to honoring the wonderful accomplishments of Dr. Tarbell, we are recognizing another MGH physician who has contributed so much, not only to the MGH, but also to the advancement of the field of radiation oncology — Dr. C.C. Wang."

As Hotline goes to press, we have learned the sad news that Dr. Wang died Dec. 14. Plans for a memorial service are under way and will be announced in a future issue of Hotline.
