Torchiana receives Thier award

David F. Torchiana, MD, chair and chief executive officer (CEO) of the Massachusetts General Physicians Organization (MGPO), was awarded the Samuel O. Thier, MD, Physician Leadership Award by Partners Community HealthCare, Inc. (PCHI). The award is named for Samuel O. Thier, MD, who served as president of the MGH from 1994 to 1997 and as president and CEO of Partners HealthCare from 1996 to 2002. Torchiana (pictured at right) was chosen in recognition of his vision, integrity and commitment to the highest standards of care. "Dave listens to the concerns of everyone and works hard to come up with a solution that is fair and that everyone can live with," said Thomas Lee, MD, CEO of PCHI. "He has been a very important influence on our network. He shows that decent behavior can be contagious."

Torchiana became chief of Cardiac Surgery in 1998. He was named chair and CEO of the MGPO in 2003.
