2005 Claflin Distinguished Scholar Award applications available

Applications for the 2005 Claflin Distinguished Scholar Awards now are available
for researchers interested in supplemental funding. Sponsored by the MGH Office for Women's Careers and the Executive Committee on Research, the purpose of the awards is to provide funding to help junior faculty maintain research productivity during child-rearing years. It is intended that this transitional funding will increase opportunities for women to advance to senior positions in academic medicine. The awards are for two years, with a maximum of $30,000 in direct costs per year.
To qualify, MGH staff members must be MDs or PhDs within seven years of their first faculty appointment. Applicants also must have an academic appointment at the level of instructor or assistant professor at Harvard Medical School and must provide evidence of strong research training, productivity and a well-defined focus in either basic or clinical research. Finally, applicants must be responsible for the care of children.

The awards are named in honor of Jane D. Claflin, honorary MGH trustee, who
originally chaired the Women in Academic Medicine Committee, which helps facilitate the careers of women in science at the MGH.
