Gottlieb named to head Partners' Psychiatry and Mental Health programs

Gary Gottlieb, MD, MBA, was appointed as the first chairman of Partners Psychiatry and Mental Health System Oct.1.

Gottlieb will oversee the Partnerswide mental health delivery system and its academic psychiatry programs. These include the psychiatry and mental health services of all Partners institutions – including the MGH, McLean, BWH/Faulkner, Spaulding, The North Shore Medical Center and Partners Community HealthCare, Inc.

Reporting to Samuel O. Thier, MD, president and chief executive officer of Partners, Gottlieb will work with the chiefs of psychiatry at each Partners affiliate to unite clinical programs providing comprehensive mental health services to patients throughout New England and beyond while nurturing the research and teaching missions of these institutions.

"Gary Gottlieb's experience in building partnerships among health care organizations and insurers is a valuable asset in fusing the work of the Partners affiliates into a single high-quality mental health care network," says Thier.

Prior to his Partners appointment, Gottlieb served as director and chief executive officer for Friends Hospital in Philadelphia, the nation's oldest nonprofit psychiatric hospital. He also served as a clinical professor of Psychiatry at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine.
