  • Immune system control of HIV may not protect against second infection
    Although antiviral therapy during the earliest stages of infection can enable HIV-infected individuals eventually to control the virus with their immune systems alone, that control may not protect against infetion with another strain of HIV. In the Nov. 28 issue of Nature, an MGH-based research team reports on a study participant who, having maintained successful immune control of HIV for almost a year, became infected with another strain of the virus.

    ancy J. Tarbell, MD, director of Radiation Oncology for MassGeneral Hosptial for Children and director of the MGH Office for Women's Careers, and Gordon L. Brownell, PhD, honorary physicist and former director of the Physicis Research Laboratory in the department of Radiology and an acive member of the MGH Radiation Safety Committee, recently were elected to the Institute of Medicine of the National Academy of Sciences.
  • Helpful holiday hints to stay healthy
    The holiday season now is in full swing, and while this time of year brings images of pretty packages, family reunions and snowmen on the front lawn, the holiday season also can bring the anxiety of maintaining control over diet.
  • Spaulding/MGH collaboration receives federal funding for TBI research
    According to some studies, an estimated 5.3 million Americans currently are
    living with disabilities resulting from some form of Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI). Transportation-related incidents such as auto and bicycle accidents are the leading cause
    of TBI. Because research is an important way to understand the complexities of TBI, Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital and other Partners institutions, including the MGH,
    currently are conducting a TBI-focused comprehensive research and data-collecting
    program, which recently received federal funding from the National Institute on Disability and Rehabilitation Research.

  • MGHer selected for Lance Armstrong grant
    The Lance Armstrong Foundation (LAF) recently awarded a $50,000 research
    grant to Diane Wright, PhD, director of the MGH Vincent Embryology In Vitro Fertilization Laboratory. Wright submitted the winning proposal, which focuses on methods to preserve the reproductive capacity of women undergoing treatment for cancer.
  • Partners in Excellence awards ceremony
    MGHers are invited to join James J. Mongan, MD, MGH president; Samuel O. Thier, MD, president and CEO of Partners; and Jeff Davis, senior vice president for MGH Human Resources, in congratulating the recipients of the Partners in Excellence Awards, Dec. 11, at 4 pm in the WACC Lobby.
