  • Memorial service for pediatric patients
    Families, friends and caregivers of MGH pediatric patients gathered for the ninth annual Pediatric Memorial Service Nov. 4. The special ceremony was sponsored by MassGeneral Hospital for Children's Pediatric, Neonatal and Obstetric Bereavement Program.The event is meant to provide comfort and support to those who have experienced the loss of a child.
  • MGH surgeon visits hospitals, clinic in Ukraine
    Paul Shellito, MD, of MGH Surgery, considers his recent trip to Ternopil, Ukraine, an eye-opening experience. Since the country achieved independence from the Soviet Union in 1991, Ukraine has experienced an economic depression, which has affected all areas of life, particularly the way health care is provided.
  • Tiny RNA may regulate development in animals
    A group of MGH researchers has discovered a tiny RNA gene that may control developmental timing in creatures as diverse as fish, sea urchins, mollusks, marine worms, flies, nematodes and humans. The team, led by Gary Ruvkun, PhD, of the MGH Molecular Biology Department, showed that a tiny regulatory RNA that controls the transition from larva to adult in the C. elegans nematode worm is present in the genomes of a wide variety of animals.
  • United Way campaign kicks into high gear
    Each year, the MGH encourages its employees to give to the United Way. This year's campaign, co-chaired by John Herman, MD, of MGH Psychiatry, and Nancy Marttila of the MGH President's Office, kicked off Oct. 26 and will run through Nov. 17.
  • MGH researcher sheds light on Alzheimer’s disease in new book
    Rudolph Tanzi, PhD, director of the MGH Genetics and Aging Unit, has made his mark in the world of Alzheimer’s not only as a renowned researcher but now as an author of a new book called Decoding Darkness: The Search for the Genetic Causes of Alzheimer’s Disease. Tanzi and co-author Ann Parson were the guests of honor at a recent book-signing event held at the MGH.
  • Nesson award given to MGH and BWH smoking cessation program
    The physician organizations of the MGH and BWH recently received one of the annual Nesson Awards for their collaborative smoking cessation programs. Established earlier this year, the Nesson Awards are presented in honor of H. Richard Nesson, MD, the founding father of Partners Community HealthCare, Inc. (PCHI), who conceived the idea of PCHI as a means to integrate and manage patient care.
