MGH recognizes Domestic Violence Awareness Month

In time for Domestic Violence Awareness Month, the MGH has added another program to its long list of efforts to assist employees who are survivors of domestic violence. The MGH Department of Police and Security, in coordination with the Employee Assistance Program (EAP), is proud to announce the "Call to Protect" program, which provides the use of donated cellular phones and service to members of the MGH community who are survivors of abusive or controlling relationships.

The MGH Department of Police and Security received a donation of five cellular phones, which are programmed to call 911 and Police and Security (726-2121) and are used as part of a comprehensive safety plan to give survivors immediate access to law enforcement professionals.

To qualify for this program, an individual must be an MGH employee who is concerned about her/his safety with a current or former partner. Either the EAP, which has a domestic violence specialist on staff, or a member of Police and Security must refer the individual to this program. At that time, the EAP or Police and Security will discuss safety concerns and the level of risk to an employee and determine whether a cell phone would be helpful in enhancing the employee's safety.

"The cell phones are giving victims of domestic violence the tools and confidence to be protected and supported, and to minimize risk," says Bonnie Michelman, director of Police, Security and Outside Services. "The phones can only serve to empower victims and deter potential perpetrators of domestic violence. We are grateful that with the help of Cellular One, we can offer this service." October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month and in recognition, the MGH hosted several programs and discussions (See photo captions).

MGHers and patients with concerns about either their own or someone else's experience with domestic violence, may call the EAP at 726-6976, Police and Security at 726-2121 or the MGH program Hospitals Helping Abuse and Violence End Now (HAVEN) at 724-0054.
