  • Ether Day 2002: A new chapter for a venerable story
    Ether Day, the MGH's annual celebration recognizing the length of service of its employees and also marking the anniversary of the first demonstration of the use of ether as an anesthetic, was celebrated Oct. 11 with a special ceremony under the Bulfinch Tent.
  • Only a year away: MGH gets ready for JCAHO survey
    For many MGHers, it may seem like it was just yesterday when the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO) surveyors came to the MGH for their triennial inspection. But the hospital's survey is only a year away, and preparations already have begun throughout the hospital.
  • MGH Chaplaincy: A spiritual resource
    The MGH Chaplaincy Department celebrated National Pastoral Care Week Oct. 10 with a musical performance in the Main Corridor by Inca Son Music of Peru. The Chaplaincy staff also hosted an information table, which featured its services and other spiritual resources.
  • Systems team picks up the PACE
    The systems team for the Patient Administrative Cycle Enhancements (PACE) project has been working for the past few months to make significant enhancements to both current and new systems for PACE, which will ultimately redesign outpatient administrative processes.

  • It's just a little pinch: MGH offers flu shots
    Despite last year's mild flu season, it is important for MGHers to protect themselves from the flu this year by getting vaccinated. It can lead to complications such as pneumonia, bronchitis and even death. Each year, the flu is responsible for the hospitalization of 114,000 people and 20,000 deaths in the United States.
  • A little knowledge could prevent burns
    Many people don't know that the common cooking ingredient vanilla extract is highly flammable and can cause small house fires to accelerate quickly. This little known fact and other information about fire and burn prevention were given to the MGH community during Burn Prevention Week, Oct. 7 to 11.
  • The United Way: Compassion in action
    The United Way is well known for bringing hope and help to needy individuals in Boston and the surrounding areas. Just as the MGH United Way campaign kicks into high gear, programs are underway that highlight the importance of United Way funding, not only in the community but also at the MGH itself.
  • Clowning around
    Ringling Brothers Barnum and Bailey Circus brought a little magic to MassGeneral Hospital for Children Oct. 10. Clowns Richard and Mikey entertained young patients on the pediatric floors by juggling scarves, spinning plates on their fingers and performing silly skits.
