Ether
painting open house
All members of the MGH community are invited to join artists Warren and Lucia Prosperi to
celebrate the completion of their painting "The Birth of Modern Surgery." The
open house will be held Oct. 16, from 1 to 5 pm in the Ether Dome. The painting, which was
researched by the Prosperis for more than a year, is the first accurate depiction of the
events of Oct. 16, 1846, when the use of ether as an anesthetic first was demonstrated
during a surgical procedure. Light refreshments will be served. For more information, call

CCFA support
group
The Crohn's and Colitis Foundation of America (CCFA) hosts a support group at the MGH for
people suffering from irritable bowel disorder, Crohn's disease or colitis. The group's
next meeting will be held Oct. 16, 6:30 pm in the Gastroenterology Department library on

Cancer
symposium
The Dana-Farber/Harvard Cancer
Center (DF/HCC) will host "Reducing the Unequal Burden of Cancer," Oct. 18,
from 9 am to 4 pm at the Longwood Galleria Conference Center. The symposium is designed
for oncology clinicians, DF/HCC leaders and faculty, and community and government leaders
who wish to discuss strategies for improving cancer care among minority populations. For

Longwood
Symphony Orchestra benefit concert
The Longwood Symphony Orchestra, the orchestra of Boston's medical community, will present
the first of four annual concerts Oct. 20, 8 pm at New England Conservatory's Jordan Hall.
The concert will feature a world premiere by composer Daniel Doura and a special
performance by singer Diana McVey in tribute to the victims of the Sept. 11 terrorist
attacks. The concert will benefit the Albert Schweitzer Fellowship, a program providing
community service opportunities for senior medical students and health care professionals
around the country. Tickets are $20 for the general public and $10 for students and

Women's Health
Day research conference
Harvard Medical School's Center for Excellence in Women's Health will sponsor a Women's
Health Day research conference, Oct. 25, from noon to 5 pm at the Galleria Conference
Center of the Inn at Longwood Medical. The conference will consist of three sessions,
including an interactive poster session, a panel discussion about the role of mentoring in
advancing research and career development, and a series of presentations by Harvard
researchers whose work has direct implications for women's health. For more information or

meeting
The Massachusetts General
Physicians Organization will hold its quarterly meeting Oct. 17, from 5 to 6:30 pm in
the O'Keeffe Auditorium. Susan Briggs, MD, and other members of the MGH Disaster Medical
Assistance Team will report on their recent rescue efforts in New York City. Stephen B.
Calderwood, MD, and David C. Hooper, MD, of the MGH Infection Control Unit, will discuss
"Bioterrorism: What Every MGH Physician Should Know." Refreshments will be

Women's Cancers
Health Fair
The Gillette Center for Women's Cancers at the MGH Cancer Center will sponsor a Women's
Cancers Health Fair Oct. 19, from 9 am to 3 pm in the White Lobby. The fair will feature
information about the diagnosis and treatment of women's cancers, including ovarian,

Domestic
Violence Awareness Month events
The MGH Domestic
Violence Working Group will sponsor several events and presentations throughout
October in observance of Domestic Violence Awareness Month. Curt Rogers, of the Gay Men's
Domestic Violence Project, will discuss "Dynamics of Domestic Violence and Referral
of Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgendered Domestic Violence Victims" at MGH Social
Service Department Grand Rounds, Oct. 18, from 10 to 11:30 am in the O'Keeffe Auditorium.
All staff are welcome. Gunner Gurwitch, organizer and outreach coordinator of The
Network/La Red, will present "Domestic Violence in Lesbian, Bisexual Women and
Transgendered Communities," Oct. 25, from noon to 1 pm in the Wellman Conference
