Beginning a new season of "Illuminations"- and a new chapter in cancer treatment
The MGH Cancer Center bears witness to numerous medical feats in the battle against cancer. The center, however, was the site of a different sort of display Sept. 6 the debut of the second season of artwork in the "Illuminations" exhibit. Illuminations is a rotating art showcase housed at the MGH Cancer Center. Local artists working in a variety of media display their artwork for a season at a time. The pieces are chosen to reflect themes of human courage, experience and life and are designed for the viewing pleasure of Cancer Center patients, families, staff and friends. Arlan Fuller, MD, co-director of the Gillette Center for Women's Cancers, and Janet Gallant, MSN, RNC, OCN, nursing coordinator for the MGH Gynecologic Oncology Service, introduced the new season's display at the Sept. 6 reception. The evening also served as a celebration of the opening of the new Gillette Center for Women's Cancers Gynecologic Oncology Unit on Cox 5. The unit will offer comprehensive evaluation and treatment for women with ovarian, endometrial and cervical cancers. The exhibit's featured artists include two former MGH cancer patients, sculptor Brian Fitzgibbon and pen-and-ink artist John Monteiro. The other Illuminations artists are David Scriven Crowley, who showcases watercolor and oil paintings; Michele Dangelo, who shares her oil work; Bill Franson, who displays his photography; John Kasbohm, who also is contributing photography; Kaz Naganuma, who shares oil and acrylic paintings and mixed media; Ellen Patton, who showcases her photography; and Donald Quincy, who displays his work in wood carving.
