Introducing the MGPO's new medical director

The Massachusetts General Physicians Organization (MGPO) welcomed its new medical director, Gregg Meyer, MD, Aug. 26. Meyer (shown below) succeeds James Richter, MD, who was the first medical director for the MGPO. Richter will be leaving the MGH and the MGPO in October to assume a new position as chief medical officer at Caritas Christi Health Care System. Meyer comes to the MGPO from his position as director for the Center for Quality Improvement and Patient Safety, which is part of the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality for the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

The MGH is familiar territory for Meyer, who trained in primary care and internal
medicine at the hospital. Prior to his training at the MGH, he graduated from Union College and Albany Medical College in New York and studied as a Rhodes Scholar at the University of Oxford in England. He also received a master's degree from Harvard School of Public Health and completed a Harvard Medical School/MGH General Internal Medicine fellowship.
In his new role, Meyer will lead medical management activities for the MGPO; work to enhance the clinical care environment at the MGH; strengthen ties between the MGPO and practicing physicians at the hospital; and serve as a senior physician adviser to the MGPO's senior management team. He also plans to practice general medicine for MGH Internal Medicine Associates.
