• Journey to JCAHO comes to an end: Survey begins
  It has been a year filled with planning and preparations, and the time has finally come for the MGH to show its excellence as the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO) surveys the hospital Sept. 15 through 19.

• Simply the best: MGH receives Magnet recognition
  A nervous excitement filled the air on Bulfinch 2 just before 11 am Sept. 8. Jeanette Ives Erickson, RN, MS, senior vice president for Patient Care Services and chief nurse, was expecting an important phone call. Surrounded by members of nursing and administration leadership, Ives Erickson patiently waited to hear from the commissioner of the American Nurses Association (ANA) the news the hospital community had been waiting for since June – would the MGH receive Magnet Nursing Recognition?

• Adequate anticoagulation level reduces impact of stroke for patients with atrial fibrillation
  A research team from the MGH and Kaiser Permanente of Northern California has shown that patients with atrial fibrillation who receive an appropriate level of anticoagulation therapy not only reduce their risk of having a stroke, they also cut the risk that any stroke they have will result in death or serious disability.

• MGH president offers a pint to the cause
  As the end of the annual blood donor challenge approaches, Peter L. Slavin, MD, president of the MGH, and Curt Smith, president of the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary (MEEI), did their part Sept. 9 in helping this side of town obtain the coveted position of most blood donations.

• Strategic planning spotlight: Expense Management Task Force
  Since the MGH embarked on an intensive strategic planning effort several months ago to determine the future direction of its clinical programs, members of seven task forces have been meeting, planning and preparing to make preliminary recommendations to the Strategic Planning Steering Committee. Hotline will be highlighting the work of some of these task forces during the next several months.

• JCAHO tip of the week
  Surveyors from the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO) will be visiting the MGH Sept. 15 through 19. In preparation for the survey, Hotline is featuring a tip of the week.
