Results are in: MGH ranked among top hospitals in nation

In what has become an anticipated annual event, the U.S. News & World Report's "America's Best Hospital's" honor roll has been published, ranking the MGH third in the nation. BWH also made the hospital honor roll, ranking 10th. Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore was ranked first overall, and the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn., ranked second. Cleveland Clinic in Ohio was tied with the MGH for third place.

The MGH scored 24 points in 12 specialties, with a number one ranking in the psychiatry category for the seventh year in a row, as well as a number one ranking in the kidney disease category for the second year.

Below is a complete list of the MGH rankings in the areas of specialty:

Cancer  19;  Cardiology and heart surgery  3; Digestive disorders  4; Geriatrics  4; Gynecology  7; Hormonal disorders  2; Kidney disease  1; Neurology and neurosurgery  2; Orthopaedics  3; Pediatrics  14; Psychiatry  1; Respiratory disorders   5; Rheumatology  7;  Urology  7

Other Partners institutions that ranked in their area of specialty include McLean Hospital, ranking fifth in psychiatry, and Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital, ranking 11th in rehabilitation. The Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, which collaborates with the MGH and BWH in Dana-Farber/Partners CancerCare, ranked fourth in cancer.

In addition, Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary, a sister institution of the MGH, ranked third in the ear, nose and throat category and fourth in eye care.

The annual publication of the honor roll – now in its 13th year – has become a resource for the general public in choosing hospitals for medical care. The listed hospitals were chosen based on reputation, mortality rates and clinician surveys.

The MGH and BWH have been among the leading institutions since the publication began conducting the survey in 1990. The honor roll will appear in the July 22 issue of U.S. News & World Report, which will be available on newsstands July 15.
