• From M*A*S*H to the MGH – actor Alan Alda interviews researchers
  It may not have been "meatball surgery" on the television series M*A*S*H, but actor Alan Alda seemed to be just as comfortable in the medical surroundings of the MGH during a recent visit. Last week, Alda and a production crew came to tape a show for the Public Broadcasting System (PBS) series "Scientific American Frontiers."

• ADVANCES: New technique induces growth across spinal cord injury
  Using a totally new approach, MGH researchers have for the first time induced the growth of severed adult mammalian spinal cord fibers across the site of the injury.

• MGH to test new cancer drug
  Cancer patients from the MGH, BWH and Dana-Farber Cancer Institute will be among the first to take endostatin, a protein discovered in the lab of Judah Folkman, MD, of Children's Hospital, shown to shrink tumors in animal trials.

• Memorial gift to MGH Thoracic Surgical Unit
  The MGH Thoracic Surgical Unit on Ellison 19 recently received a generous gift of state-of-the-art monitoring equipment from Protocol Systems, Inc., a company that manufactures EKG monitoring systems. The gift was made in honor of Stephanie Macaluso, RN, a longtime MGH nurse who died in July 1998.

• MGH Clinical Pastoral Education program – first of its kind in the nation
  Many medical milestones have been reached at the MGH – from the first demonstration of ether used for surgery to the first X-ray used in the United States. Now the MGH is home to a different kind of milestone: the first Clinical Pastoral Education program tailored specifically to help health care professionals incorporate spirituality into their clinical care.

• A new baby and a wedding
  Joanne Pantaliere and Derek Cipriano were looking forward to getting married in the near future. When their little girl Isabella was born May 27 at the MGH, however, they were so overjoyed with her arrival they decided to marry the next day on Ellison 13 and include their tiny new family member in the ceremony.
