Bowditch Prize nominations now being accepted
Nominations now are being accepted for this year's Nathaniel Bowditch Prize. The $5,000 award will be presented to an MGH employee — clinician or nonclinician — who has made a significant contribution to improving quality of care at the hospital while reducing the cost of such care. The award was established in 2000 by Charles and Nancy Munger, through the Alfred C. Munger Foundation, to honor Nathaniel Bowditch, a 19th-century pioneer in celestial navigation and an early supporter of the MGH. Nomination forms are available in the Main Lobby, the Blum Patient and Family Learning Center, the Bigelow 10 nursing office and the Massachusetts General Physicians Organization office on Bulfinch 2. All nominations should be submitted by July 31 to Andrew Warshaw, MD, chairman of the Bowditch Prize Selection Committee, White 506. For more information, call Suzanne Williams at (617) 726-8254.

MHA Fair Payment/Shared Responsibility legislation
The Massachusetts Hospital Association (MHA) has asked all hospitals to help support the MHA Fair Payment/Shared Responsibility legislation. This legislation will ensure that sufficient state resources are invested in hospitals by implementing responsible state Medicaid reimbursement and increasing the state's contribution to the uncompensated care pool to help relieve the disproportionate burden on hospitals.

The MHA is conducting a campaign called "Healthy Hospitals — Healthy Commonwealth" to garner support. MGH employees who are interested in learning more about this legislation and contacting their state senators can call (800) 681-1688. Those who call this number will reach a recorded message that explains the legislation. The message will then prompt callers to leave a message with their home addresses, which will automatically generate a postcard from the employee to the employee's state senator. Employees may also generate a postcard by visiting the MHA website at www.mhalink.org.
