excellence with Pam Ellis Memorial Secretarial award Sharon Fiumara greets many visitors every day
in the WACC at the busy MGH Cardiology practice where she works. Last
week, Jeff Davis, senior vice president for Human Resources, paid her
a visit to deliver some good news: Fiumara is the recipient of this
year's Pam Ellis Memorial Secretarial award.
Quality
and safety at the MGH Last fall, MGH leadership announced the establishment
of a new hospitalwide program to help coordinate the many quality and
safety efforts at the MGH. The new Quality and Safety program was launched
to incorporate several initiatives already in practice and provide an
enhanced management structure.
First
MGH spine tumor lecture The MGH Spine Tumor Center hosted the first
Brian D. Silber Lectureship April 5, featuring guest speaker Fred J.
Epstien, MD, founding director of the Institute of Neurology and Neurosurgery
at the Beth Israel Medical Center in New York.
MGH and
BWH top NIH research funding For the seventh year in a row, the MGH has ranked
first among independent hospitals in research funding from the National
Institutes of Health (NIH). For 2000, the MGH received $180 million
— an increase of $22 million from 1999.

chronicle of compassion: Hospice movement founder visits the MGH On April 20, Dame Cicely Saunders, OM, DBE,
FRCP, FRCN — considered the founder of the modern hospice movement
— shared her experiences with a crowd of MGHers, members of the
MGH Institute of Health Professions and other Massachusetts hospice
professionals gathered in the Shriners Burns Hospital auditorium.
