  • Celebrating 60 years of giving the gift of life
This April marks a major milestone for the MGH Blood Transfusion Service (BTS) — it is celebrating its 60th anniversary. The celebration began with a cake-cutting ceremony April 1 and will continue throughout the month with an information display in the Main Corridor through April 12 and a gala celebration April 27. Also, all donors who give blood during the month will receive a special commemorative T-shirt.
  • Gearing up for Children and HealthCare Week
Staff from MassGeneral Hospital for Children are gearing up for the sixth annual celebration of National Children and HealthCare Week, which will be held at the MGH April 21 to May 3. This year's theme is "Olympics of Good Health: Light the Fire Within."
  • Play ball: Toronto baseball player collaborates with MGH
While Toronto Blue Jays first baseman Carlos Delgado was in town this week to face off against the Red Sox during this year's opening series, he took time off from practice to visit the MGH for a special collaboration. Delgado has made a major contribution to a project that will establish a telemedicine link between the MGH and Buen Samaritano (Good Samaritan) hospital in Aguadilla, a city on the west coast of Puerto Rico.
  • MGH catches Red Sox fever
The Red Sox may not have fared well on their season's opening day, but MGH fans still rallied to their support. Employees, patients and visitors were treated to a Red Sox welcome at the Eat Street Cafe April 1, with ball park treats such as hotdogs, popcorn and Cracker Jacks.
  • MGH honors beloved benefactor, volunteer and friend
Jane Claflin is a familiar face at the MGH. For nearly 50 years, she has generously given her strength, wisdom and unflagging support to the hospital she loves — as a trustee, fundraiser and friend. As she steps down from her official philanthropic leadership role, many MGHers gathered to recognize her years of service to the hospital at a dinner March 22 at the Four Seasons Hotel in Boston.
  • Book sales to benefit Stoeckle Center
Ben Lipson, a longtime MGH patient and Boston Globe contributor, recently celebrated the publication of his book, which focuses on the issues of choosing the right long-term care insurance. The proceeds from the book, entitled J. K. Lasser's Choosing the Right Long-Term Care Insurance, will benefit the Marjorie E. Lipson Memorial Fund at the John D. Stoeckle Center for Primary Care at the MGH.
