Team MGH loses game but wins big

With much anticipation, the MGH's newly formed hockey team took to the ice Feb. 7 in a fund-raising event that raised more than $11,000 for the MGH United Way campaign. On the 25th anniversary of the Blizzard of '78, another unexpected snowstorm raged outside the New England Sports Center in Marlborough, Mass., as Team MGH faced off against the Black and Gold Legends — a team of former Boston Bruins hockey players. The employees, family and friends who ventured out into the snow for the game were treated to a night of fun.

As some might have anticipated, Team MGH was defeated by the Black and Gold Legends (16 to 4),but that didn't keep the team's spirit down. "It was all in good fun," says David Read, team player and chair of the MGH United Way campaign.

Jennifer Jackson, administrative director for Radiation Oncology, sang the national anthem. Jeff Davis, senior vice president for Human Resources, was on hand to draw the names of raffle winners from a bedpan. One raffle winner received a hockey stick autographed by the Bruins.

"We all had such a wonderful time for a great cause," says Read. "Most of the Bruins players joined us for a celebration following the game too. They gave an incredible amount of support and are looking forward to doing this again next year."
