Opening of new MGH
imaging facility in Chelsea A new CT imaging facility has opened in Chelsea, providing state-of-the-art, diagnostic imaging services to MGH patients on the North Shore and surrounding communities. MGH Imaging-Chelsea offers the latest imaging technology including a newly released advanced computed tomography (CT) scanner from General Electric (GE) — the "LightSpeed" Qxi . A CT or "CAT" scanner combines X-ray and computer technology to allow physicians to view wafer-thin cross sections of internal organs. MGH Imaging-Chelsea is one of the first locations in the country to install this type of CT scanner, which offers significant benefits over other available equipment — such as faster scans to decrease a patient's time in the scanner, higher resolution to produce better quality images, three-dimensional capabilities allowing more detailed analysis, and enhanced diagnostic capabilities for complex conditions. MGH radiologists will read the studies using online digital image transfer capabilities. Images also will be available to clinicians on the Partners network. "There is a high demand for CT services throughout the hospital," says James Thrall, MD, radiologist-in-chief. "This new scanner will be an important relief valve to the hospital and will increase access for both inpatients and outpatients." The scanners at the main campus of the hospital are slated to be upgraded to the same level as the GE LightSpeed later in the year. According to Sanjay Saini, MD, director of CT Services, the new scanner is more patient-friendly because it shortens the time required for a scan without compromising image quality. The new scanner allows physicians to capture images of a patient's anatomy up to six times faster than traditional scanners, reducing time for full-body scans from several minutes to a 20-second interval. In emergency situations, the time saved can be critical. Thrall added that increased access to CT services and improved productivity will ultimately contribute to reducing the overall cost of care by reducing patients' length of stay in the hospital. MGH Imaging-Chelsea is conveniently located across from the MGH·Chelsea HealthCare Center, at 100 Everett Ave., off Route 1 near the Tobin Bridge. According to Thrall, the Chelsea location will save considerable time and effort for North Shore patients, who can avoid traveling to the main campus while still receiving high-quality MGH care and subspecialty expertise. Examinations may be scheduled by calling 4-XRAY (4-9729). For further information, contact Kevin Sweeney, senior project manager, at 4-8519 (pager 34149).
