Claflin Distinguished Scholar Awards

Applications for the 2001 Claflin Distinguished Scholar Awards now are available for those interested in supplemental funding for research. Sponsored by the Executive Committee on Research and the MGH Office for Women's Careers, the purpose of the awards is to provide funding for junior faculty to sustain research productivity during child-rearing years. It is intended that this transitional funding will increase010501Claflin.jpg (16184 bytes) opportunities for women to advance to senior positions in academic medicine.

The awards — one in basic and one in clinical research — will be given to two eligible candidates to cover up to $30,000 in direct costs per year over two years.

To qualify, MGH staff members must be MDs or PhDs with academic appointments at the instructor level or above at Harvard Medical School and must provide evidence of strong research training, productivity and a well-defined focus in either basic or clinical research.

The awards are named in honor of Jane D. Claflin, honorary MGH trustee, who originally chaired the Women in Academic Medicine Committee, which helps facilitate the careers of women in science at the MGH.

Applications should be submitted by Feb. 21 to Research Management, Grants and Contracts, 50 Staniford St., 10th floor, Suite 1001. Awards will be announced in March. For more information, call Karen Durant Faria at 724-2724 or visit http://mghra.partners.org/news/dec00news.html#anchor129823 for application format and criteria.
