MGHers urge women to have mammograms

Barbara Smith, MD, director of the Gillette Center for Women’s Cancers at the MGH and Larry Ronan, MD, an MGH primary care physician, helped Boston Mayor Thomas Menino and Lt. Governor Jane Swift commemorate Mother’s Day by urging women over 40 to have annual mammograms.

Smith joined Mayor Menino May 10 in Mattapan as he unveiled a new, city-owned mammography van designed to reduce breast cancer deaths among women in Boston neighborhoods. Operated by Mobile Diagnostics Services with support from Dana-Farber/Partners CancerCare (DF/PCC) and the American Cancer Society, the van will offer convenient and accessible mammography to all women, regardless of their income or insurance status.

Ronan joined Swift and Sen. Steven Lynch (D-South Boston) at a public health event entitled "Mothers and Daughters, Caring for Each Other" at the South Boston Community Health Center. Free mobile mammography was provided all day by DF/PCC 052199van.jpg (20371 bytes)through a grant from Mellon Bank. In addition to mobile mammography, the MGH is providing pediatric cardiology and physiatry services at the South Boston Community Health Center.
