Narrative Report: Research: My colleagues and I in the Psychotherapy Research Program at MGH (Stuart Ablon, Carl Marci, and Ray Levy) in collaboration with researchers at BIDMC (Tony Lembo) and HMS (Ted Kaptchuk, Lisa Conboy, and Eric Jacobson) were awarded an NIH (NCCAM) grant entitled Patient Variables and Placebo Responses in IBS (1 R21 AT002564). I was the lead author for this grant, and I am spearheading its implementation. We have completed our data analysis and are in the process of preparing the manuscript for publication. I will be the first author on this publication. In addition, in collaboration with researchers at HMS (Ted Kaptchuk) and BWH (Michael Wechsler), we have secured a second placebo-related grant, entitled The Reliability of the Placebo Effect in Asthma (1 R21 AT 002793). I serve as a statistical consultant on this grant, and we are in the middle of data collection. I will also serve as a statistical consultant on an NIH grant entitled, Neural Correlates of Spirituality and Healing, in collaboration with Sara Lazar of MGH Charlestown. Funding has been awarded, and we anticipate beginning data collection in early 2008. Finally, my collaborators and I are in the process of developing several follow-up grants in the area of placebo studies. These projects involve a variety of disorders including a follow-up IBS study (in collaboration with Anthony Lembo at BIDMC), migraine headache (in collaboration with Rami Burstein of BIDMC), and Parkinsons Disease (in collaboration with Felipe Fregni of BIDMC). Teaching: I am an Assistant Professor of Psychology and Statistics at Endicott College in Beverly, Massachusetts. I teach courses in General Psychology, Abnormal Psychology, Theories of Psychotherapy, Statistics, and Research Methods. In addition, I serve as academic advisor to 20 students. For the past five years, I have co-taught a weekly seminar at MGH entitled Psychotherapy Research and Practice, attended by approximately eight psychiatric residents and psychology fellows. I have made presentations at MGH Grand Rounds (Psychotherapy Process Research: What Is New and Why It Matters), at HMS Osher Institute Grand Rounds (Why Tests of Statistical Significance are Bad for Science), and at the MGH/McLean Psychiatric Residency Training Program (Understanding Statistical Significance, Effect Size, and Statistical Power). In addition, I gave a paper at an international conference in Tutzing, Germany (Mirror, Mirror on the Wall: Placebo Effects that Exist Only in the Eye of the Beholder). Finally, I provide pro bono teaching consultations in research methods and statistics to a wide variety of individuals within the HMS system, including: MGH Faculty: Carl Marci, Stuart Ablon, Helen Reiss, Ira Lable, Sara Lazar HMS Faculty: Eric Jacobson, Ted Kaptchuk, Cathy Kerr, Lisa Conboy MEEI Faculty: Mark Hatton, Peter Rubin BWH Faculty: Michael Wechsler BIDMC Faculty: Anthony Lembo, Rami Burstein Clinical: I maintain a private practice in general psychotherapy with adults and couples. My caseload is approximately 15 patients per week. B. Report of Current Research Activities: As indicated in the narrative report above, I am actively involved in several NIH funded research projects focusing on placebo effects in medicine and psychiatry. In addition, I am actively working with collaborators at MGH, BWH, BIDMC and HMS on grant applications targeted to the NIH. D.
