Administration Guidelines

Usual Dosage Range and Route:

SLOW IV INJECTION : 1 - 20mg over 4 to 5 minutes

*LOADING DOSE IS USUALLY GIVEN PRIOR TO STARTING MAINTENANCE*

MAINTENANCE : 1 - 150mg / hr TITRATED TO PATIENT'S RESPONSE

Standard Concentration:

1 mg / ml

MICROINFUSION:
50mg/50ml
500 mg / 50 ml

EW Standard

50mg/50ml (1mg/ml)

Special Considerations:

- Rapid injection can cause increased side effects

- Tolerance may result in higher dosage requirements

-When using a continuous infusion, a bowel regimen should be started to prevent an ileus or constipation.

Precautions and Side Effects:

- Respiratory depression, bradypnea

- Bronchospasm, tachypnea

- Ileus, constipation, nausea, vomiting

- Hypotension

- CNS depression

- Tachy, bradycardia

- Will potentiate other sedatives
