Generic Name:

Hepatitis B Immune Globulin, HBIG

Trade Name:

Nabi-HB, BayHep B

Action:

Imparts passive immunization against hepatitis B by providing antibodies to hepatitis B surface antigen (anti-HBs)

Indications:

Prevention of recurrent severe Hepatitis B infection/potential related sepsis in the immediate postoperative period in liver transplant patients with fulminant Hepatitis B

Usual Dose:

Usual dose is 10,000 units IV over 2 hours

Dose once daily for 6-7 days

Administration Preparation:

Do not shake vials because of potential of precipitating protein

Mix each dose in 200mL 0.9% sodium chloride

Mix in glass bottle

Administration Guidelines:

Use Nabi-HB within 6 hours of reconstitution

Infuse over 2 hours

Special Considerations:

Restricted to the transplant service.

First dose started in the OR by anesthesia, during liver transplant surgery

Doses 2-7 are given by the nursing staff

Follow Hepatitis B surface antibody levels every Monday and Thursday and dose as needed after day 6 to keep titers greater than 100-500 IU/L

Precautions and Side Effects:

Dizziness, fever, chills, malaise

Hypotension, flushing, nausea and vomiting

Contraindicated for use in patients with IgA deficiency
