Indications:

Diabetes Insipidus

Hemorrhaging associated with nephrotic syndrome

Management of perioperative bleeding in patients with a known bleeding diathesis

Administration Guidelines:

 

 

Usual Dosage Range and Route:

DIABETES INSIPIDUS

HEMORRHAGE

0.2 to 0.8mcg/hr

15 to 20 mcg/ hr as a single dose over 15 - 60 MINUTES

Standard Concentration:

8 mcg / 250 ml

15 to 20 mcg in 50ml

Normal Saline only

Special Considerations:

Multiple infusions of desmopressin have been associated with a reduced response of uremic bleeding times. This suggests that maximal responses are achieved short-term. Additional doses may be minimally effective and may even increase the bleeding time.

- Serum and urinary electrolyte levels should be known prior to therapy and monitored during desmopressin administration

Precautions and Side Effects:

- Epistaxis, flushing

- Tachycardia

- Acute coronary syndrome

- Hypertension, hypotension

- Psychosis, headache

- Water retention, elevated serum potassium

- Abdominal cramps, Nasal Congestion
